Please join us for the opening reception of the “Romualdo Costa: A Century of Faith Love, and Art” exhibit at the George Dunbar Gallery in Slidell City Hall. The opening reception will be held on Friday, September 15th, from 5-7 p.m. and the exhibit will be on display at the George Dunbar Gallery in Slidell City Hall from September 20th-October 27th. Gallery hours are by appointment only Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Same-day viewings will be accommodated based on availability. Please call the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs at (985) 646-4375 for appointments. The Slidell Cultural Center is located at 2055 Second Street, on the first floor of City Hall in Olde Towne Slidell. Admission is free.

White Linen & Lagniappe 2023

The fifth annual White Linen and Lagniappe takes place on Saturday, August 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Olde Towne Slidell. This family-friendly event features an evening of art, live entertainment, fine and casual dining, cool drinks, unique shopping and lots of lagniappe. Several bands will be playing during the event and many of Olde Towne’s offices, restaurants, bars, shops, and stores will be open during the event to showcase their businesses.

This collaborative event is hosted by the City of Slidell, Olde Towne Slidell Main Street, Slidell Historic Antique Association and the Olde Towne Merchants Association.

‘Inspirations, Impacts, & Influences’ exhibit honoring George Dunbar opens July 14 at Slidell Cultural Center

Olde Towne Arts Commission (OTAC) and the City of Slidell are proud to announce the opening of an invitational exhibition, “Inspirations, Impacts, & Influences” at the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall. The opening reception will be held on Friday, July 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The concept for this exhibit is to pay homage to George Dunbar, the premier artist who brought Modern Art from New York to the Southeast in the 1950’s. Since then, Dunbar has encouraged these artists to push their own boundaries and to continuously follow their passions.

The artists include Dana Bordelon, Charlotte Lowry Collins, Lizzie Shelby Daquin, Matt Litchliter, and Martin Needom. The artists were chosen based on one commonality: their interactions with and appreciation for Dunbar, who is also the namesake of the gallery. This exhibition displays each artist’s unique views, as well as their intersections and divergences from each other.

An Artist’s Talk on Friday, July 14 at 6 p.m. will offer insight into the inspiration, impact, and influences for these artists. Both the opening and talks will be open to the public and is free of charge.

“We are excited to partner with OTAC to present this exhibit and bring together such a talented group of artists to honor George Dunbar,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “We invite everyone to join us for the opening reception and artist’s talk.”

The George Dunbar Gallery is located in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall, at 2055 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. To view the exhibit, call the City of Slidell’s Department of Cultural & Public Affairs at (985) 646-4375 to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available Monday – Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit will be on display July 17 – August 25, 2023. Admission is free.

City offices closed June 19 in observance of Juneteenth

In observance of Juneteenth, city offices will be closed on Monday, June 19, 2023, and will reopen during regular hours on Tuesday, June 20.

Essential personnel will remain on duty. If Slidell residents experience problems with their water or sewer service, they should call the City Services 24-hour emergency hotline at (985) 643-6140.

Permits for golf carts to drive on city streets available on June 15

The Slidell City Council recently passed a golf cart ordinance allowing golf carts to travel on City of Slidell streets with a posted speed limit of 25 mph or less. This ordinance goes into affect on Thursday, June 15, 2023.

“Cities around the country have passed ordinances allowing their citizens to travel around their communities on golf carts, and I’m excited that Slidell is now one of these cities,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “This will only add to the charm of Slidell and I’m excited about this opportunity for our community. Please be safe and make sure to follow all the rules.”

Citizens are encouraged to read the golf cart ordinance (Code of Ordinances, Chapter 27, Article V, Ordinance No. 4117), which includes regulations for driving a golf cart on city streets. It can be viewed on the City of Slidell’s website.

Before golf carts can drive on city streets, they must be inspected and permitted with the City of Slidell. Inspections are by appointment only at the following locations:

These businesses are certified by the City of Slidell to perform golf cart inspections and issue permits on behalf of the city. Golf carts must display the permit sticker applied by the inspector once the golf cart has passed inspection. A biennial golf cart permit fee is $100. The golf cart ordinance (Code of Ordinances, Chapter 27, Article V, Ordinance No. 4117) lists the requirements to have a golf cart permitted. Citizens must read the ordinance before their golf cart is permitted, and acknowledge receipt of the ordinance during inspection.
