“Inspirations, Impacts, and Influences” Olde Towne Arts Center Exhibit- Opening Reception

Please join us for the opening reception of the “Inspirations, Impacts, and Influences” Olde Towne Arts Center exhibit at the George Dunbar Gallery in Slidell City Hall. The opening reception will be held on Friday, July 14th, from 5-7 p.m. and the exhibit will be on display at the George Dunbar Gallery in Slidell City Hall from July 19th-August 25th. Gallery hours are by appointment only Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Same-day viewings will be accommodated based on availability. Please call the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs at (985) 646-4375 for appointments. The Slidell Cultural Center is located at 2055 Second Street, on the first floor of City Hall in Olde Towne Slidell. Admission is free.

‘Inspirations, Impacts, & Influences’ exhibit honoring George Dunbar opens July 14 at Slidell Cultural Center

Olde Towne Arts Commission (OTAC) and the City of Slidell are proud to announce the opening of an invitational exhibition, “Inspirations, Impacts, & Influences” at the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall. The opening reception will be held on Friday, July 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The concept for this exhibit is to pay homage to George Dunbar, the premier artist who brought Modern Art from New York to the Southeast in the 1950’s. Since then, Dunbar has encouraged these artists to push their own boundaries and to continuously follow their passions.

The artists include Dana Bordelon, Charlotte Lowry Collins, Lizzie Shelby Daquin, Matt Litchliter, and Martin Needom. The artists were chosen based on one commonality: their interactions with and appreciation for Dunbar, who is also the namesake of the gallery. This exhibition displays each artist’s unique views, as well as their intersections and divergences from each other.

An Artist’s Talk on Friday, July 14 at 6 p.m. will offer insight into the inspiration, impact, and influences for these artists. Both the opening and talks will be open to the public and is free of charge.

“We are excited to partner with OTAC to present this exhibit and bring together such a talented group of artists to honor George Dunbar,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “We invite everyone to join us for the opening reception and artist’s talk.”

The George Dunbar Gallery is located in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall, at 2055 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. To view the exhibit, call the City of Slidell’s Department of Cultural & Public Affairs at (985) 646-4375 to schedule an appointment. Appointments are available Monday – Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit will be on display July 17 – August 25, 2023. Admission is free.

City offices closed June 19 in observance of Juneteenth

In observance of Juneteenth, city offices will be closed on Monday, June 19, 2023, and will reopen during regular hours on Tuesday, June 20.

Permits for golf carts to drive on city streets available on June 15

The Slidell City Council recently passed a golf cart ordinance allowing golf carts to travel on City of Slidell streets with a posted speed limit of 25 mph or less. This ordinance goes into affect on Thursday, June 15, 2023.

“Cities around the country have passed ordinances allowing their citizens to travel around their communities on golf carts, and I’m excited that Slidell is now one of these cities,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “This will only add to the charm of Slidell and I’m excited about this opportunity for our community. Please be safe and make sure to follow all the rules.”

Citizens are encouraged to read the golf cart ordinance (Code of Ordinances, Chapter 27, Article V, Ordinance No. 4117), which includes regulations for driving a golf cart on city streets. It can be viewed on the City of Slidell’s website.

These businesses are certified by the City of Slidell to perform golf cart inspections and issue permits on behalf of the city. Golf carts must display the permit sticker applied by the inspector once the golf cart has passed inspection. A biennial golf cart permit fee is $100. The golf cart ordinance (Code of Ordinances, Chapter 27, Article V, Ordinance No. 4117) lists the requirements to have a golf cart permitted. Citizens must read the ordinance before their golf cart is permitted, and acknowledge receipt of the ordinance during inspection.

Update: Boil Water Advisory lifted for 1555 – 1597 Gause Blvd.

6/13/23, 10 a.m. UPDATE: The Boil Water Advisory has been lifted.

 

The City of Slidell has issued a Boil Water Advisory for the following addresses due to a loss of pressure:

  • 1555-1597 Gause Blvd.

All affected areas have been notified by the City of Slidell. The Boil Water Advisory will be in effect until the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals analyzes all the water samples. It usually takes several days. Everyone will be notified once the advisory has been lifted.

Lionel J. Washington Community Pool Reopens June 13

After extensive renovations, the Lionel J. Washington Community Pool is scheduled to open for the summer on Tuesday, June 13, at 12 p.m. in Possum Hollow Park. Pool hours are Tuesdays – Saturdays, from 12 to 6 p.m. The cost is $1 per swimmer and Slidell Mayor Cromer will pay for the first 200 swimmers.
