A ‘Retrospective’ of the art of George Dunbar opens Friday, March 18, at Slidell Cultural Center

The City of Slidell, the Olde Towne Arts Commission (OTAC) and the City of Slidell’s Commission on the Arts are proud to announce the upcoming Arts Evening exhibition, “George Dunbar: A Retrospective” opening on Friday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall.
This is the first solo exhibition for Mr. Dunbar, Slidell’s premiere artist. His work is in the collections of the British Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum, as well as prestigious galleries from New York to New Orleans. The Retrospective exhibit will include quintessential works from his private collection, including rare pieces from his early decades and recent figurative works.
“Mr. Dunbar is a world-renowned artist and we are honored that he is displaying his works here in his hometown of Slidell,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “George was an integral part of creating the Slidell Commission on the Arts and the city’s Cultural Affairs Department, designing the gallery for the original Slidell Cultural Center, and creating a rich cultural atmosphere here in Slidell. I know that our citizens are grateful for the numerous artistic contributions that he continues to make in our community.”
Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist at the opening reception. The exhibit will also be open during Arts Evening from 5 to 9 p.m. on March 19.
The Slidell Cultural Center is located at 2055 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. The exhibit will remain on display through April 22. Gallery Hours are Mondays through Fridays, from 12 to 4 p.m. To view the exhibit during gallery hours, call the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs to make an appointment at (985) 646-4375. Public Master Plan Meeting for Olde Towne Slidell scheduled for Thursday, February 17 at the Slidell Auditorium

The City of Slidell and Olde Towne Slidell Main Street will host a Public Meeting to discuss a Master Plan for Olde Towne Slidell on Thursday, February 17 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium.

Philip Walker, principal of The Walker Collaborative, will present at the meeting. He has been an integral part for the master plan for cities such as Covington, La.; Fairhope, Al.; and Natchez, Ms. For more information, please visit www.walkercollaborative.com.

City of Slidell receives $3.1 million in Water Sector Program Grant funding for wastewater and drainage improvements

City of Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer, State Senator Sharon Hewitt and State Representative Mary DuBuisson are pleased to announce that the City of Slidell will receive $3.1 million to invest in water and drainage infrastructure as part of the Water Sector Program Grant from the State of Louisiana.

“This funding is needed for the residents of Slidell to help prevent overflows in certain areas throughout the city after inclement weather,” said Mayor Cromer. “I would like to thank Senator Hewitt, Representative DuBuisson, and all the members of the State Legislature who made this funding possible for the City of Slidell.”

A $10 million dollar rehabilitation to the existing Slidell Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently underway in the City of Slidell. The additional grant funding will allow the city to build a large and efficient 2.5 million gallon equalization tank along with making other improvements.

“When people ask me about what keeps me up at night, I always respond that it is the deterioration of our state’s water and sewer systems,” said Senator Hewitt, District 1. “These are basic services that citizens expect and deserve, yet tend to get overlooked when budgeting with limited funds. Funding water and sewer improvement projects in St. Tammany has been a priority of mine and I’m pleased that the State and the City of Slidell have been able to collaborate on a critical project. Slidell residents deserve a reliable sewer system. This project is a major step forward.”

The proposed improvements at the Slidell Wastewater Treatment Plant aim to implement more efficient wastewater service by preventing overflows and consistently treating wastewater to the requirements set forth by state standards.

“I am so happy to share this great news!” said Representative DuBuisson, District 90. “The City of Slidell and St. Tammany Parish have both received money from the State for Water Sector projects that will be used for much-needed repairs. Our citizens deserve to have clean, safe water, and I am pleased to have been a part of the Legislature that approved this funding.”

10th Annual Mayor’s Community Breakfast to be held on Friday, Jan. 28

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer invites the public to join him for the tenth annual Mayor’s Community Prayer Breakfast, presented by Community Christian Concern, on Friday, January 28, 2022, at 7:30 a.m. in the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. Tickets are now available for $20.

This year’s guest speaker is Chief Chris Kaufmann, St. Tammany Parish Fire District 1. Chief Kaufmann was appointed Fire Chief in 2014 and under his leadership, Fire District #1 has received international accreditation, the only one in the State of Louisiana. Chief Kaufmann also gives back to the community, serving on numerous boards and organizations in St. Tammany Parish.
“Chief Kaufmann is an essential part of Team Slidell and he does an incredible job for the citizens of Slidell and St. Tammany Parish,” said Mayor Cromer. “I would like to invite everyone in our community, regardless of their faith, to attend this special event and hear the Chief’s message. This is a community event and everyone is welcomed.”
The Slidell Municipal Auditorium is located at 2056 Second Street. Doors will open at 7 a.m. and the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. Seating is limited.

Slidell receives $4.7 million in ARP support – solicits input from citizens

The City of Slidell, Louisiana will be receiving nearly $4.7 million from the American Rescue Plan to strengthen support for vital public services.

Several important improvements around the city will be prioritized with these funds:

  • Aeration at the Terrace Avenue Waste-Water Treatment Plant will be rehabilitated
  • New water and sewage facilities will be installed from Lindberg Drive across I-10 to the E. I-10 Service Road
  • Several pump stations around the city will be rehabilitated
  • City operating systems and software for online payments and application submissions will be upgraded
  • A kiosk will be installed outside of the city administration building to allow for contactless, after hours payments

Funding for the American Rescue plan can be used to:

  • Support urgent COVID-19 response efforts to continue to decrease spread of the virus and bring the pandemic under control
  • Replace lost revenue for eligible state, local, territorial, and Tribal governments to strengthen support for vital public services and help retain jobs
  • Support immediate economic stabilization for households and businesses
  • Address systemic public health and economic challenges that have contributed to the inequal impact of the pandemic

UPDATE: Operation Blessing arrives in Slidell with water, cleaning supplies and dry goods

11:00 am UPDATE: The supplies have run out and the distribution area is now closed. We will update this page when more supplies arrive.

Help has arrived! Operation Blessing is in Slidell with water, cleaning supplies and dry goods! They are based at the Heritage Park overflow parking lot.

IMPORTANT! Enter at Fremaux and Bayou Lane. You will not be able to enter from West Hall or Pennsylvania Avenue. Go over the railroad tracks and turn right to enter Heritage Park. You will continue down Bayou Lane through the park and turn into the overflow lot. Once you receive the supplies, you will exit the same way down Bayou Lane and exit back onto Front Street. Please follow the barricades!

A big thank you to Operation Blessing and all the faith based organizations who are coming to lend us a helping hand!

People are asking about ice and MRE’s. We are still coordinating and will make an announcement as soon as those items arrive.

  • Stay tuned for updates on the City of Slidell’s website at MySlidell.com and St. Tammany Parish’s website at STPgov.org. More information can also be found on the City of Slidell, Louisiana Facebook page, St. Tammany Parish Government Facebook page, and on the Slidell Police Department Facebook page.
  • Citizens are encouraged to check their storm drains near their homes to make sure they are cleared of debris and to clear their yards of any items that could be blown around by heavy winds.
  • From CLECO: Prepare now for potential Tropical Storm Ida. Begin putting together an emergency kit including items like flashlights, bottled water, nonperishable food and a first aid kit. Remember to account for elderly family members and pets. Check emergency equipment, such as generators and storm shutters.
  • All STPPS Schools and offices will be closed Monday, August 30 due to expected severe weather conditions.
  • In Preparation for Hurricane Ida, the City of Slidell will open their sand bag depot on Saturday, August 28, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the parking lot on the corner of Bayou Lane and Pennsylvania Avenue near Heritage Park – Slidell, La.  Drivers should enter the parking lot from the Bayou Lane entrance and follow the signage and barricades. Pre-filled sand bags will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once those bag run out, it will become a self-service depot, but assistance will be available for citizens who can not fill their own bags. There is a limit of 15 sand bags per vehicle.
  • St. Tammany Parish Government had also has self-service sand bag locations open at these following locations near Slidell:
    • St. Tammany Parish Public Works – Airport Road Barn, 34583 Grantham College Rd
    • The Old Levee District Site, 61134 Military Road (Hwy. 190)
  • From Coasts Environmental Services: Due to the threat of Ida – which is projected to become a major Hurricane- we will not be running any routes on Monday August 30th.

  • From Keep Slidell Beautiful: As we all prepare for Ida, please secure your garbage cans and any loose items near your homes or businesses. City crews are out checking and clearing storm drains, but please do your part and remove any debris that you may see. Businesses should also remove any temporary signage. Everyone please be safe!
  • From Coasts Environmental Services: As you make preparations around your house today for the arrival of winds and rain due to Hurricane Ida, we would ask the you please remove your cart(s) from the curb and place in a secure location so that the cart(s) will not float away should your area flood.

  • Generator Safety Tips: Do not use inside any structure. Do not use near open windows and doors. Do not use in wet conditions. Do not use when overheated. Do not use a wall outlet.
  • Make sure your pets are safe and bring them inside during the storm.
  • From St. Tammany Parish Government:
    Shelters, of last resort, opening at 4 p.m. Saturday
    * Creekside Jr. High – General Population Electrically Dependent Shelter :
    – Shelter requirements:
    1) Must require electricity to sustain life
    2) Must have one caregiver 18 years or older (only one will be allowed) to accompany
    3) Must bring own linen and bedding, food and water, and medicines.

  • An update from Cleco. Over 5,500 customers, mostly in the Slidell area, are without power due to a fallen tree. See below for more information from Cleco.
  • St. Tammany Parish Government has enacted a curfew for all residents in the parish starting at noon today.
  • From CLECO: As of 12:30 p.m., approximately 7,000 customers in St. Tammany Parish and 140 customers in St. Mary Parish were without power due to Hurricane Ida. Crews are still out working to make repairs, but will have to cease when conditions deteriorate.
  • From CLECO: St. Tammany Parish: Throughout the day, crews have been working in between feeder bands and pausing restoration efforts during heavy rain and high wind. As of 1:45 p.m., the wind began to increase and the decision was made to cease restoration efforts until after the storm passes and conditions are safe. Customers can report an outage by calling 1-800-622-6537.
  • From WSTE: We expect a long restoration effort and ask for your patience as crews work as quickly and safely as possible to restore your power.
