April 11th Storm Recovery Update

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer met with other City and Parish officials and representatives from the Slidell Police Department, Fire District 1, Acadian Ambulance and CLECO. Here’s some notes from the meeting this morning.
Team Slidell is in recovery mode. City crews are clearing roads, assessing damaged buildings, drainage choke points, water wells and pump stations.
CLECO reports that they have 400 crews in the Slidell area. They are assessing and trying to restore power to the 30,000 still without power in St. Tammany. Citizens are encouraged to check the CLECO outage map at https://myaccount.cleco.com/Portal/#/PreOutages for updates.
The city’s water system never lost pressure. Water service inside the city limits remains safe to use and consume.
Fritchie Park (905 W. Howze Beach Road) will serve as a distribution center. IMPORTANT: enter Fritchie Park from Howze Beach Road.

UPDATE: ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ postponed due to weather

UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, Some Enchanted Evening with the Northshore Community Orchestra is cancelled for today. We will reschedule for another date.

 

It’s the perfect recipe for an enchanting evening. Enjoy a picnic with family and friends, sprinkle in some great music by the Northshore Community Orchestra, add a gorgeous sunset over scenic Bayou Bonfouca and voilà! You have “Some Enchanted Evening!”

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer, the Slidell City Council, and the Slidell Commission on the Arts are pleased to present the 22nd annual “Some Enchanted Evening” concert on Sunday, April 28 in Heritage Park. The concert begins at 5 p.m. Admission is free.

“Some Enchanted Evening” is the perfect family event for both the young and young at heart. A celebration of family, friends and fellowship, this event encourages the community to come together to enjoy timeless music from the Northshore Community Orchestra.

The Northshore Community Orchestra is the only symphony orchestra in St. Tammany Parish where both youths and adults can make learning and performing music a lifelong endeavor. The orchestra was established in 1987, and has operated continuously ever since. The orchestra performs several full orchestra concerts as well as some smaller group ensembles throughout the year, with genres including classical, jazz, pop, folk, ethnic, traditional, movie themes, and Broadway hits. Each year, the orchestra typically performs for Slidell’s Patriot Day ceremony and Christmas and spring concerts.

The members of the orchestra come from Slidell, St. Tammany Parish and from surrounding parishes in the Greater New Orleans area and south Mississippi. The members represent a diverse assortment of backgrounds such as students, medical professionals, engineers, skilled tradesmen, scientists, homemakers, members of the military, educators, and retirees. Though our student members typically begin with us around late middle school or junior high age, currently our youngest member is just 9 years old, and our oldest is in his 80s. Some of the orchestra’s musicians are family members who play together – spouses, parents, children, and siblings.

The orchestra’s conductor since 2006 has been Mrs. Susan Messina, a Slidell native who has a master’s degree in music from Southeastern Louisiana University, and over 30 years experience as a music educator. She has served as a band director at several area schools, and currently teaches private lessons on a wide variety of instruments at Christy Music in Slidell.

Guests are encouraged to bring their ice chests, picnic baskets, blankets, and chairs to enjoy a picnic in the park.

Heritage Park and Boat Launch closed Saturday, April 6, for ‘A Storybook Type of Day’ event

In preparation for A Storybook Type of Day event, the City of Slidell is announcing that Heritage Park, the boat launch and roads immediately outside of the park will be closed in conjunction with the event.

Heritage Park and the boat launch will close to the public at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 5, and will remain closed until 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 7. Both entrances to Heritage Park on Bayou Lane will be closed (from Palmettos to Pennsylvania Avenue) to traffic. The public will be able to launch their boats (for no charge) at the Slidell Marine – Marina located at 36440 Old Bayou Liberty Road by Nathan’s Restaurant. Please park vehicles/trailers along the road on Bayou Liberty Road (LA433).

Hop into your favorite story book costume and join Kids in Development Slidell (K.I.D.S.) for A Story Book Kind of Day, Saturday, April 6, 2024 in Slidell’s Heritage Park. The free, family-friendly, storybook-themed event takes place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is inclusive to all ages and abilities.

For the second annual event, themed “Pirates and Princess”, A Storybook Kind Of Day promises to be a delightful experience for families, featuring engaging activities, storytelling sessions, and interactive learning opportunities, all centered around the theme of pirates and princesses. Attendees can look forward to a day packed with daring adventures and royal charm while contributing to a meaningful cause — ensuring the safety of infants and young children in St. Tammany Parish.

Funds raised from this event, along with donations from supporters, will enable K.I.D.S. to provide free car seats through certified installation specialists to those facing financial challenges and serve children across St. Tammany Parish.

City offices closed March 29 in observance of Easter Holiday

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer and the members of the Slidell City Council would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter!

In observance of the Easter holiday, city offices will be closed on Friday, March 29, for Good Friday and will reopen during regular hours on Monday, April 1, 2024.

Essential personnel will remain on duty, should an emergency arise. If Slidell residents experience problems with their water or sewer service, they should call the City Services 24-hour emergency hotline at (985) 643-6140.

The Bayou Jam concert featuring Fat City Swing scheduled for March 22, 2024, has been cancelled due to weather. The concert will be rescheduled for a later date.

City holds groundbreaking for Slidell Skatepark and Slidell Pickleball Courts

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer was joined by members of the Slidell City Council, elected officials, city administration and the community for the Groundbreaking of the Slidell Skatepark and Slidell Pickleball Courts on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.

The Slidell Skatepark – designed by Pillar Design Studios, LLC – will be 14,000 square feet and designed for both novice and pro skaters. The total cost of the project is roughly $875,000 and will be constructed by Saucier Construction Co. The project should be completed by October 2024.

The Slidell Pickleball Courts will consist of 12 new outdoor courts. Kyle & Associates is the design engineer and the courts will be constructed by Cobalt Construction, Inc. The total cost of the project is roughly $1 million and it should also be completed by October 2024.

Salad Days student art exhibit now on display at Slidell City Hall

On Friday, March 15, 2024, arts students from around St. Tammany Parish were joined by family and friends in the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall for the opening reception and award ceremony for the 33rd annual Salad Days Juried Exhibition of Student Art.

“We are incredibly blessed to have so many talented students here in St. Tammany Parish and I would like to congratulate all the Salad Days artists,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “I invite everyone to come to City Hall and see these amazing works of art.”

This year’s juror is Mary Christopher. Christopher received a Bachelor of Art Education from Oklahoma State University in 1977 and a Master’s Degree in Management and Supervision from Central Michigan University in 1989. She has worked in a variety of fields including social work, marketing and volunteer services. She retired from teaching art at Cypress Cove Elementary in 2016. While at Cypress Cove she received recognition as Teacher of the Year and Educator of Distinction. She was selected as the Slidell Art League’s Master Artist of the Year in 2010 and was featured by the City of Slidell with a one woman show in 2015. Her art was selected as the Arts Evening 2018 Poster Artist and was featured on the cover of Slidell Magazine.  She has served on Slidell’s Commission on the Arts for many years and remains active in the Slidell Art League. She completed two murals commissioned by the City of Slidell along with five pelicans for the Pelicans on Parade public art project.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade is March 10 – Olde Towne Street Closures Announced

In preparation for the Olde Towne Merchant Association’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, several streets in the Olde Towne area will start closing at 6:00 a.m.

For public safety, any vehicle that is left parked along the parade route after 6 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, will be towed at the owner’s expense.

This includes sections of:

  • Bouscaren St.
  • First St.
  • Erlanger Ave.
  • Fremaux Ave.
  • Teddy Ave.
  • Front St.
  • Carey St.
  • Cousin St.
  • Robert St.
  • Brakefield St.
  • Guzman St.
  • Bryan St.
  • Cleveland Ave.
  • Bilten Ave.
  • Mayfield Ave.
  • Old Spanish Trail
  • Lee St.
  • College St.
  • William Tell St.
  • Ciruti St.

Please refer to the parade route map to see the affected streets.

The Slidell Police Department will begin closing down streets along the parade route to vehicular traffic at a later time. Please do not congregate in the streets until all the streets are closed.
