Acclaimed Artist Terrance Osborne to Judge Slidell’s “Fragments of Imagination” Exhibition

Calling all artists!

The Olde Towne Arts Commission (OTAC), the City of Slidell, and the Slidell Commission on the Arts are honored to announce that renowned artist Terrance Osborne will serve as juror for the upcoming “Fragments of Imagination” exhibition to be on display at the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall June 20 – July 25, 2025.

“We are incredibly honored to have an artist of Terrance Osborne’s caliber serving as our juror for this exhibition,” said Slidell Mayor Bill Borchert. “This is a remarkable opportunity for local artists to showcase their work and receive feedback from one of Louisiana’s most distinguished artists. I encourage all artists to submit their works and be part of this exciting exhibition. I also want to extend my gratitude to the Olde Towne Arts Commission for their continued partnership in bringing such high-caliber exhibitions to our community.”

Artists interested in participating may submit up to three original works for consideration by Monday, June 9, 2025. Each submission must include high-quality digital images in JPEG format (300 dpi), a completed entry form, and a $35 non-refundable application fee. All submissions should be emailed to otacslidell@gmail.com. Selected artists will be notified by email on June 13, with artwork delivery scheduled for June 16 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Click here to download the prospectus.

Osborne is celebrated for his vibrant, colorful depictions of New Orleans culture and architecture. His distinctive style has earned him international recognition, with his work featured in multiple official Jazz and Heritage Festival posters. Osborne’s art has caught the attention of major brands, leading to successful collaborations with Raising Cane’s, Nike, NBA, Coca-Cola, and other national companies. His pieces are collected worldwide and have been featured in numerous galleries and museums across the country.

“Fragments of Imagination” opens on Friday, June 20, 2025, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., where attendees can meet Osborne and the participating artists. Awards will be announced during the opening reception. The exhibition continues through July 25, 2025 with gallery hours by appointment only, Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Time to Renew Your Golf Cart Registration in Slidell

The City of Slidell announces that it’s time for residents to renew their biennial golf cart permits. To maintain authorization for operating golf carts on city streets, all existing permit holders must schedule a reinspection of their golf carts and obtain an updated permit sticker by June 15, 2025.

The inspection process remains unchanged, with appointments required at one of the city’s two authorized inspection facilities:

These businesses are certified to perform golf cart inspections and issue permits on behalf of the City of Slidell. Golf carts must display the permit sticker applied by the inspector once the golf cart has passed inspection. Residents who do not currently have an existing registration can also obtain one at the same inspection facilities. The biennial permit fee remains at $100.

Residents are reminded that golf cart operation is restricted to streets with posted speed limits of 25 mph or less, in accordance with city ordinances. During the renewal process, owners must review and acknowledge their understanding of the golf cart ordinance (Code of Ordinances, Chapter 27, Article V, Ordinance No. 4117). This requirement ensures all operators remain informed about current regulations and safety requirements.

Leadership Northshore Class of 2026 Invite Public to Northshore Trashformation Opening Reception

Slidell Mayor Randy Fandal and the Leadership Northshore Class of 2026 invite the public to attend the opening reception for “Northshore Trashformation” on Friday, Sept. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will be displayed at the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall.

Dr. Bob, a renowned New Orleans folk artist whose signature “BE NICE OR LEAVE” signs have become a popular part of the area’s culture, serves as the juror for this exhibit.

Northshore Trashformation features both 2D and 3D artwork created from litter and unused materials collected by participating artists. The exhibit is an eco-art initiative designed to transform how the community sees litter. By using art as a catalyst for change, the project turns environmental challenges into opportunities for education, engagement, and long-term sustainability within St. Tammany Parish.

The idea for the project was inspired while a member of the team was vacationing in Mexico and saw large wire fish sculptures serving as interactive recycle bins for plastic bottles. As the bottles accumulated, the sculptures became works of art built from literal trash, offering an exciting example of both the problem and the solution. Inspired by that concept, the team brought the idea to Slidell.

“I want to thank the Leadership Northshore Trashformation Team for organizing this exhibit and bringing this creative solution to help address the serious problem of litter in our community,” said Mayor Randy Fandal. “They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and that is definitely the case with Northshore Trashformation. I invite everyone in the community to come see how these artists turned trash into treasured artwork.”

Northshore Trashformation worked with the Olde Towne Arts Commission and the City of Slidell’s Department of Cultural & Public Affairs to engage artists and assist in planning this event. Additional support for the project came from Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, Keep Slidell Beautiful, and Keep Louisiana Beautiful, which partnered on cleanup days and financial support.

Leadership Northshore is a development program that brings together emerging and established leaders from our area to build relationships, strengthen connections, and create a lasting impact in our community. The Northshore Trashformation Team includes Amy Anderson, Lisa Bartels, Julie Brooks, George Dupuis, Kisha Gant, Cynthia Flowers, Rachel Litchliter, and Kerri Soo, with mentors Glen Boyer and Sandy Swartz. Each class works collaboratively in teams on projects designed to address local needs and inspire positive change throughout the Northshore.

Northshore Trashformation will remain on display from Sept. 21 through Oct. 22, 2026. The George Dunbar Gallery is located at 2055 Second Street in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall. Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. by appointment only. Same day appointments are available by calling the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs at (985) 646-4375. Admission to both the opening reception and the exhibition is free and open to the public.

City of Slidell Announces 2026 Bayou Jam Fall Concert Series Lineup

The City of Slidell is excited to announce the complete lineup for the 24th annual Bayou Jam Fall Concert Series, featuring four free concerts and a special Veterans Day performance.

The fall series kicks off Sunday, Oct. 4, with Flow Tribe at Heritage Park. Amanda Shaw and the Cute Guys will take the stage Oct. 11, followed by Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos on Oct. 25. The series will conclude Nov. 8 with a special Veterans Day Concert featuring the Northshore Community Orchestra at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium.

“We are excited to welcome everyone back for another great season of Bayou Jam concerts,” said Slidell Mayor Randy Fandal. “Over the last 24 years, these concerts have become a tradition, bringing family and friends together to enjoy live music right here in Slidell. I encourage everyone in our community to come out and enjoy these concerts!”

The first three Bayou Jam concerts will be held at Heritage Park from 5 to 7 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy an evening of live music with family and friends. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. All concerts are free and open to the public.

2026 Bayou Jam Fall Concert Series

Sunday, Oct. 4 – Flow Tribe • 5 to 7 pm • Heritage Park
Founded in 2004, Flow Tribe brings the soul, funk and fire of New Orleans to stages across the country. The high-energy band has spent more than two decades performing throughout the country, blending funk, soul, blues, rock and other musical influences into a sound all its own. Known for their energetic performances and New Orleans roots, Flow Tribe is sure to get the Bayou Jam crowd moving. This will be the band’s first performance at Bayou Jam.

Sunday, Oct. 11 – Amanda Shaw and the Cute Guys • 5 to 7 pm • Heritage Park
Amanda Shaw is a Louisiana-born fiddle player and performer whose music blends the sounds of Cajun tradition with the jazz, blues, funk and rock ’n’ roll influences of her native New Orleans. She began playing violin as a child and learned Cajun music at local fais do-dos, where seasoned musicians helped shape the sound she still brings to the stage today. By age 15, Shaw had signed a record deal with Rounder Records, appeared in two Disney films and was featured in the documentary Hurricane on the Bayou. Since then, she has performed on national stages, including Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, the Today show and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and has shared the stage with many artists, including one of her idols, Cyndi Lauper. A Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee and Big Easy Award winner for Best Female Entertainer, Shaw has released nine albums and EPs and continues to bring Louisiana’s rich musical heritage to audiences with her own energetic, modern sound. Shaw first performed at Bayou Jam in March 2003 when she was just 15 years old and has returned to the series numerous times.

Sunday, Oct. 25 – Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos • 5 to 7 pm • Heritage Park
Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos will bring a piano bar experience to Bayou Jam for the first time in the concert series’ history. Featuring two pianists on stage, the interactive show combines the energy of a live concert with audience requests, comedy and plenty of surprises. The performers play a wide-ranging repertoire spanning rock, country, hip-hop, oldies, jazz and everything in between, with the audience helping shape the setlist. Since 2010, Felix and Fingers has built a reputation for creating high-energy, interactive experiences where audiences sing, dance, laugh and become part of the show. Fans can expect to hear favorites from artists such as Billy Joel, Elton John, Journey and Neil Diamond, along with plenty of unexpected requests.

Sunday, Nov. 8 – Veterans Day Concert with the Northshore Community Orchestra • 4 to 5 p.m. Slidell Municipal Auditorium
Established in 1987, the Northshore Community Orchestra is St. Tammany Parish’s only symphony orchestra where both youth and adults can embrace music as a lifelong pursuit. The orchestra is made up of musicians from Slidell, St. Tammany Parish, the Greater New Orleans area and south Mississippi, ranging from students to retirees and representing a wide variety of backgrounds, including medical professionals, engineers, tradespeople, military members, educators and even multi-generational families who perform together. Under the direction of Slidell native and longtime music educator Mrs. Susan Messina, the orchestra performs a wide range of music, from classical and jazz to pop, folk, movie themes and Broadway hits, and regularly performs at community events, including Some Enchanted Evening and the City of Slidell’s Holiday Concert.

Please note that the Veterans Day Concert on Nov. 8 will be held at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium, not Heritage Park, and will begin at 4 p.m. instead of the 5 p.m. start time for the other Bayou Jam concerts. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Open seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Admission is free, and concessions will be available for purchase.

Slidell Breaks Ground on New Police Department Facility

On Sept. 3, Slidell Mayor Randy Fandal joined Police Chief Tommy Williams, members of the Slidell City Council, city administration, elected officials, community leaders, and members of the public for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Slidell Police Department facility.

“Today is a very special day for me, both as mayor and someone who has had the privilege to serve as the Chief of Police for Slidell,” said Mayor Fandal. “Nine years ago, we began talking about our police department and what our community would need in the future. We worked with our citizens, and in April 2024, the citizens of Slidell passed a public safety tax, allowing us to begin our future. After a year of planning, hard work and commitment, we’re finally here.”

Expected to be completed in spring 2028, the larger, modern facility will better serve Slidell’s growing community and support the dedicated work of its police officers and staff.

“Today, the ground we break is more than soil, it’s the beginning of a home where service, courage and commitment will take shape for decades to come,” said Chief Williams. “Our current building has withstood countless storms, floods, small electrical fires and numerous mechanical challenges for more than 60 years. This new police facility represents our belief in a safer, stronger future for the City of Slidell.”

Mayor Fandal and Chief Williams also thanked past and present members of the Slidell City Council and city officials, the Slidell community for their overwhelming support, and everyone who has worked so hard to bring the project to this point.

The project was designed by MP Design Group and will be constructed by Voelkel McWilliams Construction, LLC. The estimated construction cost is $17.5 million.

In a fitting twist, the new facility will be located at 911 Robert Blvd., an address that seems especially appropriate for the new home of the Slidell Police Department.

Mayor Randy Fandal is inviting the community to participate in the seventh annual Olde Towne Slidell Community Christmas Golf Cart Parade on Sunday, December 13th at 5 pm. People and groups are welcome to come out dressed in creative Christmas costumes and enjoy the parade of decorated golf carts.  This event is free!
