Slidell mourns loss of Slidell City Councilman Val Vanney

It is with great sadness that the City of Slidell announces that Slidell City Councilman Val Vanney Jr. passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

“Our prayers go out to Ms. Bonnie and the Vanney family,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “Val was a true public servant who was wholly dedicated to his district and his community. He always voiced his constituents’ concerns and represented them to the best of his ability in the Slidell City Council. He will be greatly missed in our community.”

Councilman Vanney was elected in 2014 to serve the residents of District D and was re-elected without opposition in 2018. Before serving on the Slidell City Council, Vanney was the owner of Val Vanney’s Marine, Vanney’s Seafood, and V & A Homes, LLC. Vanney also served in the National Guard and on the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Reserve from 1967 to 1980.

“On behalf of the Slidell City Council, we express our condolences to the Vanney family,” said Kenny Tamborella, President of the Slidell City Council. “Val was a true advocate for the residents in his district and the citizens of the City of Slidell. He was dedicated to Slidell, the city that he loved and called home.”

Vanney is survived by his wife Bonnie Vanney, son Val Vanney III and granddaughters Victoria and Alexandria Vanney.

To many, Vanney was affectionately known as “Uncle Val.” He expected only the best from everyone and had no problems expressing his opinion. Even if he disagreed with you, his no-nonsense demeanor would usually fade away to a smile or a pat on the back.

Rest In Peace, Uncle Val.

Celebrate Christmas in July and help support Keep Slidell Beautiful and Christmas on Front

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”

Join Keep Slidell Beautiful on Friday, July 9 for their Christmas in July Holiday Light Fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. All proceeds benefit the Christmas on Front Holiday Light Displays.

Tickets are $80 each or two for $150 and include admission, food, open bar and entertainment by WITNESS. Tickets can be purchased online via EventBrite, but to avoid online service fees, tickets can be purchased directly from Trey Brownfield, Keep Slidell Beautiful Director, by emailing tbrownfield@cityofslidell.org or calling (985) 646-9564.

“Last Christmas, I was overwhelmed by the support that we received from our community coming together to support Keep Slidell Beautiful’s Christmas on Front Street initiative and bringing back holiday light displays that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina,” said Brownfield. “We have plans to go bigger and better this year by extending the lights further down Front Street and maybe into other parts of Slidell. But to do this, we need your continued support.”

Table Sponsorships are also available for $1,000 which includes a table for eight people, acknowledgment in event publicity, recognition during and after the event, and one full-scene light display sponsorship during Christmas on Front in November and December 2021.

In 2020, Keep Slidell Beautiful was able to raise over $20,000 in sponsorships and in-kind support from local businesses and organizations for Christmas on Front.

Slidell Movie Nights- Ghostbusters

Grab your lawn chairs and picnic blankets and head out to Heritage Park this summer for Slidell Movie Nights on select Saturday evenings. The movies, presented by the City of Slidell, begin at sunset, roughly 8:30 pm. Admission is free. Bring ice chests (and bug spray!) to the park to enjoy the free movies, and bring your appetite too, because concessions will be available for a nominal charge.
