Boil Water Advisory Issued for Section of Olde Towne

UPDATE: The Boil Water Advisory has been lifted.

The City of Slidell has issued a Boil Water Advisory as a precaution due to a loss of pressure from repairing a water main for the following address:

  • 700-701 Cleveland Avenue
  • 2544-2628 Fourth Street
  • 2538 Fifth Street
  • 2643 Third Street

Notices have been posted for the affected addresses by the City of Slidell. The Boil Water Advisory will be in effect until the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals analyzes all the water samples. It usually takes several days. Everyone will be notified once the advisory has been lifted.

Louisiana Watershed Initiative Project Breaks Ground in Slidell

The City of Slidell held a groundbreaking ceremony today for a $2.37 million flood mitigation project that will create a more resilient Louisiana, using the Louisiana Watershed Initiative’s approach to reducing flood risk and respecting the natural functions of the state’s watersheds.

The Lee Street Drainage Pump Station Hardening project will construct mechanical bar screens in front of the Lee Street Drain Pump Station intake basin to capture debris and prevent clogs due to heavy rain in an effort to reduce flooding.

“We are thrilled to begin the construction of the Lee Street Drainage Pump Station Hardening project,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “Once complete, the new screens will automatically clear debris during storms and heavy rainfall, improving the drainage systems and minimizing flooding in the area. This project will help protect our community from flood hazards and supports our goal of fostering long-term flood resilience.”

The Louisiana Office of Community Development-Disaster Recovery funded the project through the state’s $1.2 billion CDBG-MIT grant, which is part of LWI’s Round 1 funding program for local and regional projects. LOCD-DR has approved 28 Round 1 projects, designed for implementation-ready, low-risk flood mitigation efforts with no potential negative impacts on surrounding areas.

“This Louisiana Watershed Initiative project will greatly benefit the local community as we continue working toward long-term resilience in our state,” said LOCD-DR Executive Director Gina Campo. “Not only will it improve overall drainage, it will mitigate flood risks for neighboring properties, as well as reduce the hazards of traveling on flooded roadways. LWI is dedicated to protecting our state, regions and local areas from these dangers.”

The Lee Street Drainage Pump Station Hardening project will take place in Region 7, one of LWI’s nine watershed regions throughout the state.

Calling all golf carts! Mayor Cromer is inviting you to be a part of the Olde Towne Slidell Community Christmas Golf Cart Parade. All you have to do is decorate a golf cart and you and your family and friends can be a part of the fun. This year’s parade is Saturday, November 30th starting at 5 p.m. in Olde Towne. Registration is free but limited to the first 100 golf carts.  See the form below for more information. The New Orleans Mystics bring soul to Bayou Jam concert series on Oct. 11

The New Orleans Mystics bring the soul to the City of Slidell’s Bayou Jam concert series when they return to Heritage Park on Friday, October 11, for a free concert starting at 6 p.m.

“Bayou Jam concerts are a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “We encourage everyone to bring their families and friends to enjoy a night of great music in Heritage Park. It’s the perfect way to kick off your weekend right here in Slidell.”

The New Orleans Mystics are a versatile singing group that performs a wide range of genres, including oldies, Motown, Top 40, R&B, disco, jazz, rock, and more, while staying true to their rhythm and blues roots. Formed in 1972, they have captivated audiences worldwide with their energetic choreography, powerful vocals, and dazzling outfits. Fremaux Avenue westbound turning lane closed for crosswalk construction

Starting Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, the westbound turning lane on Fremaux Avenue will be closed for approximately two months while the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) installs a crosswalk that will connect Heritage Park to Olde Towne Slidell and allow pedestrians to safely cross Front Street and Fremaux Avenue.

How to Separate Storm Debris at the Curb

Now that Hurricane Francine has passed and citizens are cleaning their properties, it’s important to know how to separate your debris for curbside pickup.

Separate debris into different piles:

  • Household trash
  • Vegetative debris – DO NOT BAG!
  • Construction and demolition debris
  • Appliances and white goods
  • Electronics
  • Household hazardous wastes

Things to remember:

  • Keep debris out of the roadway and out of the line of sight for motorists.
  • Do not bag your vegetative debris. Put all leaves and branches in a pile at the curb.
  • Do not place debris in ditches because this could lead to flooding during rain, nor should it be placed on street corners because this could cause line-of-sight issues.
  • Do not mix non-storm-related yard waste or bulk trash with storm debris.

Hurricane Francine Update – 9/12/24, 6:30 a.m.

Good morning, Slidell!
Last night, there were reports of street flooding and some fallen trees and limbs in the roadways. Palm Lake, Camellia Drive, Chamalé and Heritage Park areas still have standing water.
We don’t have any reports of any homes or businesses flooding.
CLECO reports that 9235 customers are without power in the Slidell area. We will give updates when we get them.
Please stay off the roads so that the linemen can start working on restoring power, city crews can remove debris, and first responders can move throughout the city.

Sandbag Depot opens at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10 near Heritage Park

UPDATE (9/10/24, 2 p.m.): The self-serve sandbag depot will be open from 1 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and will reopen on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 7 a.m.  to 12 p.m. 
In preparation for Tropical Storm Francine, the City of Slidell will open a self-service sandbag depot on Tuesday, September 10, starting at 1 p.m. at the parking lot on the corner of Bayou Lane and Pennsylvania Avenue near Heritage Park.
 
St. Tammany Parish Government had also has self-service sandbag locations open at these following locations near Slidell:
• Airport Road Public Works Barn (34783 Grantham College Drive, Slidell)
• Fritchie Public Works Barn (63119 LA-1090, Pearl River)
 
“I want to assure our citizens that Team Slidell is ready for Francine,” said Mayor Cromer. “All of our pumping stations are working and will be monitored around the clock. City crews are cleaning out storm drains and catch basins and making sure that drainage around the city is clear.”
 
Citizens are encouraged to check their storm drains near their homes to make sure they are cleared of debris and to clear their yards of any items that could be blown around by heavy winds.
