A ‘Retrospective’ of the art of George Dunbar opens Friday, March 18, at Slidell Cultural Center

The City of Slidell, the Olde Towne Arts Commission (OTAC) and the City of Slidell’s Commission on the Arts are proud to announce the upcoming Arts Evening exhibition, “George Dunbar: A Retrospective” opening on Friday, March 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall.
This is the first solo exhibition for Mr. Dunbar, Slidell’s premiere artist. His work is in the collections of the British Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum, as well as prestigious galleries from New York to New Orleans. The Retrospective exhibit will include quintessential works from his private collection, including rare pieces from his early decades and recent figurative works.
“Mr. Dunbar is a world-renowned artist and we are honored that he is displaying his works here in his hometown of Slidell,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “George was an integral part of creating the Slidell Commission on the Arts and the city’s Cultural Affairs Department, designing the gallery for the original Slidell Cultural Center, and creating a rich cultural atmosphere here in Slidell. I know that our citizens are grateful for the numerous artistic contributions that he continues to make in our community.”
Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artist at the opening reception. The exhibit will also be open during Arts Evening from 5 to 9 p.m. on March 19.
The Slidell Cultural Center is located at 2055 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. The exhibit will remain on display through April 22. Calling all artists – Arts Evening artist forms are now available

Calling all artists!

The City of Slidell, Louisiana is looking for artists to participate in the 26th annual Arts Evening cultural festival on Saturday, March 19, 2022. It is free for artists to participate.

Artists who wish to participate can download the Arts Evening Artist Registration Form from the city’s website, www.myslidell.com. Artists will also have to opportunity to submit digital images for consideration of having their work featured in Arts Evening publicity. Submissions should be sent to acarollo@cityofslidell.org.

Deadline for forms and art submissions is Monday, March 7, 2022

Public Master Plan Meeting for Olde Towne Slidell scheduled for Thursday, February 17 at the Slidell Auditorium

The City of Slidell and Olde Towne Slidell Main Street will host a Public Meeting to discuss a Master Plan for Olde Towne Slidell on Thursday, February 17 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium.

Philip Walker, principal of The Walker Collaborative, will present at the meeting. He has been an integral part for the master plan for cities such as Covington, La.; Fairhope, Al.; and Natchez, Ms. For more information, please visit www.walkercollaborative.com.

10th Annual Mayor’s Community Breakfast to be held on Friday, Jan. 28

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer invites the public to join him for the tenth annual Mayor’s Community Prayer Breakfast, presented by Community Christian Concern, on Friday, January 28, 2022, at 7:30 a.m. in the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. Tickets are now available for $20.

This year’s guest speaker is Chief Chris Kaufmann, St. Tammany Parish Fire District 1. Chief Kaufmann was appointed Fire Chief in 2014 and under his leadership, Fire District #1 has received international accreditation, the only one in the State of Louisiana. Chief Kaufmann also gives back to the community, serving on numerous boards and organizations in St. Tammany Parish.
“Chief Kaufmann is an essential part of Team Slidell and he does an incredible job for the citizens of Slidell and St. Tammany Parish,” said Mayor Cromer. “I would like to invite everyone in our community, regardless of their faith, to attend this special event and hear the Chief’s message. This is a community event and everyone is welcomed.”
The Slidell Municipal Auditorium is located at 2056 Second Street. Doors will open at 7 a.m. and the event will begin at 7:30 a.m. Seating is limited.

The Art of the Film: Louisiana Film Industry Expo and Fifty Shades of Louisiana: A Filmmaker’s Paradise movie poster exhibition on January 8

With millions of dollars in annual economic impact, Hollywood South is alive and thriving in Louisiana. A study commissioned by Louisiana Entertainment, a division of Louisiana Economic Development, indicates the state’s motion picture industry generated annual economic activity of more than $800 million in 2020 alone, despite pandemic shutdowns. Multiple facets of the industry, including widespread opportunities for individuals and businesses to benefit, will be presented when the Northshore Cultural Economy Coalition and the City of Slidell present “The Art of the Film: Louisiana Film Industry Expo” on Saturday, January 8, 10 am to 6 pm at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. Admission is free.

The stellar lineup of presenters includes Ed and Sue Poole, Hollywood on the Bayou internationally renowned movie experts; Linda Thurman, executive director and author; Greg Barnhill, composer, songwriter and master vocalist; Reid Wick, Membership and Industry Relations, Recording Academy/GRAMMYs, Jay Weigel, music composer, producer and conductor; Christopher Stelly, LEDA Executive Group Director, Entertainment & Digital Media; Trey Burvant, Louisiana Film & Entertainment Association Executive Committee President; Katherine Brooks, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, writer and director; Carroll Morton, Director of Film New Orleans, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy; Jason Waggenspack, The Ranch Film Studios Head of Possibilities (CEO); Bill Rainey, The Holding Tent casting liaison Bill Rainey, actor/stuntman Austin Naulty and actress Nicole Ferrier.

Presentations will include a focus on how to break into the business, creative and unexpected career options, music songwriting, production and placement, behind-the-scenes glimpses, industry incentives, business opportunities, and a focus on women in the film industry.

A panel presentation on casting and actors’ experiences will be presented at 11 am, followed by an opportunity for individuals and businesses to register for film resource directories if interested in serving as move extras and principals, provider of goods and/or services and to list properties for consideration as film locations.

The event also will feature winners of the “Create Your Own Movie” high school student poster competition. Popular Hollywood South food truck, Old School Eats, will be on site from noon until 4 pm.

The Louisiana Film Industry Expo will be complemented by “Fifty Shades of Louisiana: A Filmmaker’s Paradise” movie poster exhibition, presented by Hollywood on the Bayou, Movie Poster Archives and The City of Slidell, in the Slidell Cultural Center, which will be open from noon to 8 pm the day of the Expo, including the opening reception from 6 to 8 pm. Admission is free.

UPDATE: 2nd Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade rolls Sunday, Dec. 5 in Olde Towne Slidell – see the parade route and street closures here

Mayor Greg Cromer is inviting the community to join the City of Slidell for the second annual Olde Towne Slidell Community Christmas Golf Cart Parade on Sunday, December 5 at 5 p.m.

“We were humbled by the crowds of people who came out and supported the first Christmas parade. Olde Towne was packed!” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “Christmas is my favorite time of year and I wanted to kick-off the holiday season with an old-fashioned, small town, community Christmas parade. It’s free for everyone, so I encourage the community to join us. It will be a great time in Olde Towne Slidell!”

The parade will be led by the Slidell Sync Lawn Chair Brigade, a premier dancing group that promises to feature flashy holiday-themed lawn chairs in a very merry way, followed by decorated golf carts andand Santa and Mrs. Claus riding on an antique fire truck spreading their magical cheer to all.

Everyone from the community is encouraged to participate. To sign up to participate, go to the City of Slidell’s website at MySlidell.com to fill out the parade form and return to the Department of Cultural & Public Affairs. Registration is free and interested spectators are encouraged to mark their calendars. Deadline for submitting forms is Monday, Nov. 29.

Due to public safety, on the day of the parade the streets in Olde Towne will start to close at 6 a.m. Drivers will be able to enter Olde Towne Slidell at the intersections of Cousin Street and Sgt. Alfred Drive and Front Street and Carey Street until 3 p.m. Olde Towne Slidell will also be a no parking zone from 3 until 8 p.m. No vehicles will be allowed to enter or exit the route. All vehicles should be off the streets during this time. Refer to the shaded area in purple on the map to see the no parking zone.

Veterans Day Concert with the Northshore Community Orchestra closes out the fall Bayou Jam series

Celebrate our veterans and military heroes at the Bayou Jam Veterans Day Concert featuring the Northshore Community Orchestra on Saturday, November 6, at 4 p.m. in Heritage Park. Admission is free!

The Northshore Community Orchestra is the only symphony orchestra in St. Tammany Parish where both youths and adults can make learning and performing music a lifelong endeavor. The orchestra was established in 1987, and has operated continuously ever since. The orchestra performs several full orchestra concerts as well as some smaller group ensembles throughout the year, with genres including classical, jazz, pop, folk, ethnic, traditional, movie themes, and broadway hits. Each year, the orchestra typically performs for Slidell’s Patriot Day ceremony and Christmas and spring concerts.

The members of the orchestra come from Slidell, St. Tammany Parish and from surrounding parishes in the Greater New Orleans area and south Mississippi. The members represent a diverse assortment of backgrounds such as students, medical professionals, engineers, skilled tradesmen, scientists, homemakers, members of the military, educators, and retirees. Though our student members typically begin with us around late middle school or junior high age, currently our youngest member is just 9 years old, and our oldest is in his 80s. Some of the orchestra’s musicians are family members who play together – spouses, parents, children, and siblings.

The orchestra’s conductor since 2006 has been Mrs. Susan Messina, a Slidell native who has a master’s degree in music from Southeastern Louisiana University, and over 30 years experience as a music educator. She has served as a band director at several area schools, and currently teaches private lessons on a wide variety of instruments at Christy Music in Slidell.

Concert‐goers are invited to bring their chairs, blankets, ice chests and picnic baskets to the park to enjoy the free concerts. While the event is outdoors, attendees should follow all state mandated health and safety protocols and wear a mask if they go indoors to use the restroom facilities. Please note that park regulations prohibit pets in the park as well as the use of skateboards, scooters, barbeque grills and glass items.

Vince Vance and the Valiants throw Halloween Party in Heritage Park at Bayou Jam concert on Oct. 30

Get ready for the biggest Halloween party in Slidell! Vince Vance and the Valiants return to Heritage Park on Saturday, October 30 for the City of Slidell’s Bayou Jam Halloween Bash from 5 to 7 p.m. Kids of all ages are encouraged to attend in their Halloween costumes. Admission is free!

“Vince Vance and the Valiants has become a Halloween tradition here in Slidell,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “Vince has been doing this for our community since 2005 and I invite everyone to come out and have a great time in Heritage Park!”

Vince Vance and the Valiants are a country, pop, and rock ‘n’ roll group from New Orleans. This year, they are celebrating their 50th anniversary of performing. The group is known primarily for the single “All I Want for Christmas Is You”, which charted on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts on six separate occasions. In 2005, Country Music Television proclaimed “All I Want for Christmas is You” the No. 6 Merriest Video of All Time.

Performances by Vince Vance and the Valiants are never short on entertainment, with costume changes, comic skits, and a vaudeville flair that make Vance’s shows unique and highly memorable. Vance is also widely recognized for his single “I am New Orleans,” a song composed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

The Bayou Jam Fall Concert Series concludes on Saturday, Nov. 6 with a patriotic concert with the Northshore Community Orchestra from 4 to 6 p.m.

Concert‐goers are invited to bring their chairs, blankets, ice chests and picnic baskets to the park to enjoy the free concerts. Cuisine plays Bayou Jam on Saturday, Oct. 9

The City of Slidell’s Bayou Jam Fall Concert Series continues on Saturday, October 9, with a performance by Cuisine starting from 5 to 7 p.m. in Heritage Park. Admission is free.

“Bayou Jam concerts are a great way to celebrate as a community,” said Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer. “We invite you to come enjoy a free concert in Heritage Park with your family and friends and start your Saturday night right here in Slidell!”

No matter what your musical taste, Cuisine serves up something for everyone. Their musical recipe blends in some 70’s horn rock with some sharp 80’s sound, throws in a pinch of 50’s rock and roll and adds some 60’s horn music.
