SUMMARY:USAF Band of the West Velocity Jazz Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer invites the public to join him on Thursday\, February 23\, at 6 p.m. for a concert featuring the United States Air Force Band of the West Velocity Jazz Ensemble. The concert will be held at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium and admission is free. \nThe USAF Band of the West is a musical organization with an outstanding record of achievement. The Airmen assigned to the band are highly-trained professional musicians who have dedicated themselves to serving their country through music. \nThe USAF Band of the West travels more than 125\,000 miles annually and provides hundreds of performances to military and civilian audiences throughout Texas\, Oklahoma\, Louisiana\, Mississippi\, Alabama\, Georgia\, Florida\, and Puerto Rico. The organization is made up of the large ensembles Concert Band\, Ceremonial Marching Band\, Dimensions in Blue\, and three popular music groups\, Warhawk\, Top Flight\, and Velocity. Small ensembles within the unit include Freedom Brass\, Gateway Brass\, Spectrum Winds\, Nightwatch\, Mission Winds\, and protocol combos. This diversity enables the USAF Band of the West to perform practically any style of music from classical and country to marches and mambos. \nThe USAF Band of the West has performed for presidents\, heads of state\, and dignitaries from around the world earning an outstanding reputation among America’s military bands. \nThe USAF Band of the West has a long lineage in the United States Air Force. The band was created on October 1st\, 1941 at Moffett Field\, California and moved to Enid Army Airfield soon after. With the birth of the United States Air Force in 1947\, the band moved to what eventually became Lackland Air Force Base. The band was inactivated in 1955 but reactivated in 1959. The title “Band of the West” was used for years until May 1st\, 1997 when it was granted official status. \nThe Slidell Municipal Auditorium is located at 2056 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and seating is available on a first-come\, first-served basis.

DESCRIPTION:The City of Slidell is rolling out the red carpet for the next exhibition at the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall\, ”Art of the Movie Poster”\, exhibiting pieces from the Movie Poster Archives (MPA)\, a collection of movie posters and artifacts since the golden age of cinema. This exhibit will feature a collection of movie posters\, lobby cards\, and accessories. \nThe exhibit is on display January 13 – February 17\, 2023 and is held in conjunction with the second annual The Art of Film: Louisiana Film Industry Expo\, happening just across the street January 20-21 at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. An opening reception will be held on Friday\, January 13th from 5-7 p.m. with a special presentation by Ed Poole\, Chief Archivist of MPA\, at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Business of Film luncheon with Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and the Art of Film Expo coming Jan. 20 and 21
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what it might be like to serve as an extra in a movie or to delve into acting? Are you interested in learning more about the many facets of the film industry including production\, music\, songwriting for films or listing your property for consideration in productions? Perhaps you’d enjoy a behind-the-scenes peek at the happenings from Hollywood to Hollywood south? Art of the Film: Louisiana Film Industry Expo is a two-day event that will cover all of this and more. The two-day event will be held Friday and Saturday\, January 20 and 21 at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public with preregistration on the Expo website\, https://NorthshoreCEC.org/ArtOfTheFilmExpo. \nThe event will kick off with the Business of Film luncheon featuring keynote speaker Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser on Friday\, January 20 at noon in the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. Doors open at 11:00 am. The complete event schedule and speaker bios are available on the website. \nThe event will lead into two Expo After Hours live entertainment events\, Friday from 7 to 8:30 at The Wine Garden\, featuring Greg Barnhill and friends\, sponsored by Ozone Songwriters Festival and Saturday\, 6:30 to 7:30 pm\, with the Northshore Community Orchestra\, sponsored by the City of Slidell. Concurrently\, Hollywood on the Bayou and Movie Poster Archives will present “Art of the Poster\,” an exhibition of uniquely designed movie posters\, hosted by the City of Slidell in the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall\, directly across the street from the auditorium\, with extended viewing hours during the Expo. \nArt of the Film is presented by Northshore Cultural Economy Coalition and the City of Slidell\, with title sponsor St. Tammany Tourist and Convention Commission. Additional event sponsors include St. Tammany Corporation\, Northshore Media Group/WYLK 94.7 FM\, Slidell Magazine\, The Northshore Collaborative\, New Orleans Entertainment Coalition and Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board. \nThis event is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts\, Office of Cultural Development\, Department of Culture\, Recreation and Tourism\, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council\, as administered by the St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Holiday Concert with the Northshore Community Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Join Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer for a Holiday Concert with the Northshore Community Orchestra on Saturday\, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Slidell Municipal Auditorium. Admission is free. \nThe Northshore Community Orchestra is the only symphony orchestra in St. Tammany Parish where both youths and adults can make learning and performing music a lifelong endeavor. The orchestra was established in 1987\, and has operated continuously ever since. The orchestra performs several full orchestra concerts as well as some smaller group ensembles throughout the year\, with genres including classical\, jazz\, pop\, folk\, ethnic\, traditional\, movie themes\, and broadway hits. Each year\, the orchestra typically performs for Slidell’s Patriot Day ceremony and Christmas and spring concerts. \nThe members of the orchestra come from Slidell\, St. Tammany Parish and from surrounding parishes in the Greater New Orleans area and south Mississippi. The members represent a diverse assortment of backgrounds such as students\, medical professionals\, engineers\, skilled tradesmen\, scientists\, homemakers\, members of the military\, educators\, and retirees. Though our student members typically begin with us around late middle school or junior high age\, currently our youngest member is just 9 years old\, and our oldest is in his 80s. Some of the orchestra’s musicians are family members who play together – spouses\, parents\, children\, and siblings. \nThe orchestra’s conductor since 2006 has been Mrs. Susan Messina\, a Slidell native who has a master’s degree in music from Southeastern Louisiana University\, and over 30 years experience as a music educator. She has served as a band director at several area schools\, and currently teaches private lessons on a wide variety of instruments at Christy Music in Slidell. \nThe Slidell Municipal Auditorium is located at 2056 Second Street in Olde Towne Slidell. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and seating is available on a first-come\, first-served basis.
